Our Bride from Norway moved her wedding to South Africa to have a Charly’s Bakery wedding cake
Dear Jacqui,
Here is the story of how our wedding came to be in South Africa because of charly’s bakery 
):
Rune and I have been back and forth to Cape Town since 2004, because of studies and work. Every time we have stayed in Cape Town, Charly’s bakery have featured big time in our lives there – we just cannot resist the delicious cakes, cookies and pies you make. The taste is totally yummy, and the decor and colours are just to die for ). The last time we stayed in Cape Town for a longer period of time, we lived just around the corner to where Charly’s bakery used to be. We lived in The Square, and every day when going to and from Iziko:South African Museum, where we worked, we passed by Charly’s. And the delicious smells always managed to get us in to the bakery and buy something.. Luckily we had a gym in our appartment complex, or else we’d be in serious trouble to get clothes to fit ). Anyways, every time we went in to Charly’s, we always used to study all the fantastic wedding cakes that you’d made, and we just loved them ). They were just something completely different, and more amazing then any other wedding cake we’d ever seen before.
In 2008 we went back to Norway in April, and we started planning our wedding for 2009. It originally was planned to be in Norway, and we’d already started to look into venues and service providers. But the one thing we could not find, was somewhere to make us such a spectacular cake as we’d seen that you at Charly’s could make. And we had gotten our hearts set on a beautiful and different cake. So in my frustration during the planning, I visited your website, and was looking at all the beautiful wedding cakes pictured there. My fiancee Rune and my mother was sitting across from me, and I just put the thought out there: “What about moving the wedding to South Africa, so that we can have a Charly’s bakery cake?”. My fiancee jumped right on the idea, as he also loves Charly’s bakery. My mother at that time, hadn’t yet tried Charly’s cakes, but she wanted a vacation in South Africa, so she was also ready to move the wedding (and after trying our wedding cake, by the way, my mother has also become a Charly’s bakery fan )). And that’s what we did: We moved the wedding from Norway to South Africa to be able to have a Charly’s cake. So the cake was the first thing we had ready, when we started planning our wedding in South Africa ). And of course, we did not regret our decision! The cake we had for our wedding, was the most beautiful cake I have EVER seen! And it tasted like HEAVEN as well! So moving a wedding to South Africa for a Charly’s wedding cake, is definitely reccommended.
There you have the story! I hope you liked it. It is the truth! I will send you one photograph of us cutting the cake in this mail, and send an extra mail with another photo, as they are quite large files. One photo is black and white, where you see us completely, and the other is in colour when you just see our hands cutting the cake.

There is a Gold Mine in Cape Town – and it is run by a group of Fairy
Godmothers.
The wedding of one of my closest friends was due to take place at 11am on
Saturday morning. When she called the very very larney (and expensive!!!)
professional Wedding Cake Bakery in Kenilworth to check up on the delivery
arrangements for her wedding cake late on Friday afternoon she was greeted with
the ghastly words, “What cake?”
Not only had they misplaced her order….they also appeared supremely
disinterested in fixing the situation. Having always vowed not to be a bride who
cried the day before the wedding, needless to say she was reduced to tears. When
we spoke late on Friday evening she was on her way into her kitchen to try and
knock something up. I told her to go to bed and said I would sort it
out…….and immediately dropped an email to Charly’s Bakery in Canterbury
Street.
There’s a general air of magic about the place under normal circumstances and
I thought that if anyone could come to the rescue it would be the glorious bunch
of Bohemian women who run it. Well, when I walked in at 09h30 on Saturday
morning (a day when they usually open at 11h00, and ONLY for collections) they
had just read my email and had their wands out and at the ready. “What are her
colours?” They wanted to know….. Then, “Give us half an hour,” they
said.
Come 10h00, I returned to find a miracle of a cake iced and waiting……Two
layers of decadent chocolate cake (to DIE for!!!), covered in silver icing,
topped with softest lilac roses and tiny green chrysanthemum buds and entirely
dusted in silver edible glitter. It was just as well I hadn’t done my face
because I practically burst into tears. Not only were they willing to
inconvenience themselves to help out, but they did it with charm,
professionalism and the most unbelievable skill……..It was the stuff of fairy
tales.
The cake and I both made it to the wedding in the nick of time, and I, for one,
will never bother with another bakery ever again. To the Fairy Godmothers at
Charly’s Bakery – Thank you so very much for making yet another wish come
true.

Charly’s Amazing Oompa Loompas
So here’s some info about the Mucking Afazing people who work at Charly’s Bakery- night and day- yes we work when you sleep too! We always have music playing while we bake and ice and our staff may eat whatever they want to while they are at work.
Each member of staff gets a free birthday cake for themself and all immeadiate members of their family, each year. We work so hard to make everyone else beautiful, delicious cakes, and we want our staff to share their pride and joy at the wonderful cakes we make, with their families too.
Do you know that each of our staff have a photo of our President, Thabo Mbeki, with the birthday cake we made for him, up in their homes to show their friends and families.
We call ourselves “the Rainbow Bakery” as we are a proud and happy mix of so many different nations. We have Xhosa, Tswana, Sotho, Portuguese Angolan, Congolese, Jews, Germans, Christians and We live and work happily together.
Madiba’s turning 90
This is an open letter to Madiba, my personal Hero, who turns 90 on the 18th of July 2008.
Dear Mr Mandela
it would be my honour and privelege to bake a birthday cake for you to celebrate your 90th year on Earth. You have done so much to enrich our lives, and to uplift our spirits, and have made such a difference to South Africa, and the world.
I have baked birthday cakes for Archbishop Tutu and for President Thabo Mbeki. I have made cakes for the the amazing Oprah, who comes 3rd on my heroes list, with you 2nd only to our Lord, and my personal ambition is to make you the most incredible cake ever for the most incredible man ever.
I understand that you would like to spend your birthday at home with your family, in the Eastern Cape , but perhaps if you choose to celebrate with the people of Cape Town or the ANC thereafter , you will give me the honour of baking you a Charly’s bakery 90th birthday cake?

Charly’s Bakery in partnership!!!
So, Charly (yes there is a real Charly – my husband and Alex and Dani’s dad) is branching out and spreading the Charly’s magic.
Charly is partnering up with Marie-Louise and John of STAR Partnership, an NGO with motivation, innovation, HEART and organization. They will be fixing schools up one at a time and are starting with the Chris Hani school in Langa. Their main intention is to get libraries into schools and to educate the educators, so that the teachers can create the kind of students South Africa needs to build our Mucking Afazing country into the magical land we all believe it can be.
So… go to www.starpartnership.co.za and see the amazing work they are doing and planning. You can volunteer your services in terms of your time, money, donations of paint, bricks, cleaning materials, BOOKS, COMPUTERS, anything a student can or will need and, in fact, anything you no longer need. We will make it work by painting it, selling it to raise more funds, putting it in the library – the needs are endless.
We will be fundraising school by school and there are opportunities for businesses to have signage up on the buildings they fund, as well as using STAR Partnership as your company’s social resposibility.
Rest assured, you know that with us, the money will go directly and ONLY to the schools you want to fund and would never disappear into some fatcat’s pocket to fund his 4th holiday home.
We will also be putting food gardens into schools so that the students can use the fresh fruit and veggies for their school lunches. Charly will also be teaching some of the students how to make nutrtious, delicious food that they will be able to sell to raise funds for their schools. Entrepreneurship classes will also be available for any students who wish to start their own small businesses. We want to spread the knowhow that we have learned in nearly 20 years of creating Charly’s Bakery’s yummy cakes, cupcakes and delicious food.

Well better late then never…Valentine’s day broke all previous records, with Charly’s making more then 3000 cupcakes., plus endless Petit fours and heart shaped biscuits. My favourites said – ” I smaak you stukkend” -credit to Dani for coming up with that one. This year our customers wised up and placed their cupcake orders in advance and we baked and baked and iced red and pink hearts till we could no more! Eventually I was icing hearts onto the milk tarts, but still by 1 o clock we had sold out, and still the people kept pouring in. We could have sold another 1000 cupcakes if only we had them to sell. Even our Corporate customers spoilt their staff and customers with cupcakes!

Arch Tutu’s 75th Birthday cake
So I’m backtracking a bit, but you will soon see why. Last year we were asked by Fiona of King’s college in London to make a cake for Archbishop Tutu’s 75th birthday- our reaction- of course. Anytime you want me to make a cake for one of my personal heroes- I’m there like a shot- and Zelda-PA to Madiba- this is a big hint about a certain big 90th coming. I want to make Madiba the greatest most Mucking Afazing cake ever for the Greatest most Mucking Afazing Man of South Africa, next year in July when the BIG MAN turns 90. I am willing to change our annual holiday dates to make Madiba’s cake!
But I digress, so lots of planning went into the Arch’s cake as he is a man of many talents, and we chose words which symbolise him for the one tier- Love, Truth and Peace . And then the next tier had to have the Rainbow for the famous “rainbow nation” name of our country, and then the top tier has an Africa with a little gold cross in the place of South Africa, and of course the big gold 75 on top.
Well you can see from the photo, his delight when they brought his cake out, and we couldn’t stop smiling! But it got even better… as we were invited to the Birthday Party at the British High Commissioner’s residence, and we got all dressed up and went to party-yes we couldn’t believe ourselves at this amazing event, and of course we sat at a table right up front next to the Dutch Royal family, and FW De Klerk. What an event! We brought along our Charly’s Bakery song- “Somewhere over the Rainbow”, by Israel Kamakawi’ole and they played it when they brought out the cake. A very proud moment for us Proudly South African Charly’s Chicks!
