Arch Tutu’s 75th Birthday cake
So I’m backtracking a bit, but you will soon see why. Last year we were asked by Fiona of King’s college in London to make a cake for Archbishop Tutu’s 75th birthday- our reaction- of course. Anytime you want me to make a cake for one of my personal heroes- I’m there like a shot- and Zelda-PA to Madiba- this is a big hint about a certain big 90th coming. I want to make Madiba the greatest most Mucking Afazing cake ever for the Greatest most Mucking Afazing Man of South Africa, next year in July when the BIG MAN turns 90. I am willing to change our annual holiday dates to make Madiba’s cake!
But I digress, so lots of planning went into the Arch’s cake as he is a man of many talents, and we chose words which symbolise him for the one tier- Love, Truth and Peace . And then the next tier had to have the Rainbow for the famous “rainbow nation” name of our country, and then the top tier has an Africa with a little gold cross in the place of South Africa, and of course the big gold 75 on top.
Well you can see from the photo, his delight when they brought his cake out, and we couldn’t stop smiling! But it got even better… as we were invited to the Birthday Party at the British High Commissioner’s residence, and we got all dressed up and went to party-yes we couldn’t believe ourselves at this amazing event, and of course we sat at a table right up front next to the Dutch Royal family, and FW De Klerk. What an event! We brought along our Charly’s Bakery song- “Somewhere over the Rainbow”, by Israel Kamakawi’ole and they played it when they brought out the cake. A very proud moment for us Proudly South African Charly’s Chicks!

What’s the best part of your day?
Handing over a cake on a special occasion. Each cake is for a celebration of life. I’ve been especially honoured to cater for Desmond Tutu and Oprah Winfrey.
And the worst?
Besides getting out of bed at the crack of dawn? I’m supposed to close the shop at 4pm, but customers are still walking in at 4.45pm. By then I’m exhausted, because I start at eight in the morning.

We made Thabo Mbeki’s 65th birthday cake today

So a very exciting day for Charly’s Bakery – We made President Thabo Mbeki’s 65th birthday cake and delivered it to Parliament this morning. The cake was our delicous Wicked chocolate cake- 3 tiers, and was iced in the ANC colours- We piped Happy Birthday Mr President on the middle tier, in gold, and put edible images of our President’s face in the shape of a green Africa, as well as edible ANC flags, all around the sides of the cake. We put a gold number 65 on top of the cake. Look in our recent pictures section for a photo of The Cake!
It looked Mucking Afazing- fit for a President in fact!
Let’s Fix It Show
Hellooo…
In December 2005 we got a phonecall from “Let’s Fix it” (A program on E-TV which makes dreams come true for people who can’t afford to make their own dreams come true) to ask us if we would like to sponsor a christmas party for 30 pensioners in Athlone- our response “ABSOLUTELY!”
So we called up a friend who owns a decor company (Nadine from Theme Creations 0828550918) to ask if she would like to come onboard and do the decor for the party- her response “ABSOLUTELY!”
And so it happened- we did a selection of chocolate cupcakes with each pensioners name piped on each cupcake, a selection of bright red vanilla petit fours with gold stars and christmas trees piped on each one, Wicked chocolate cake “Flower Pots” each planted with a red rose and touched with our edible gold paint, christmas tree shaped cookies, homemade sweeti-pies painted with gold edible paint and wicked chocolate cake covered in white icing with red roses in the centre. Nadine and her team did an unbelievable job with the decor using red roses, gold base plates, gold organza saches at the back of each chair, christmas crackers and LOADSSSS more.
The party was an unbelievable hit, but it didn’t end there…
Next up was a christmas party for 500 underprivlidged children in Belville. We did 5 cakes each served 100 kids- we did a range of chocolate and vanilla cakes covered in white buttericing with christmas trees, stars and candy canes piped in bright colours on each cake. The kids went CRAZY- they had an AMAZING time and we had enough cake to feed every child twice.
The show was aired on Christmas day 2005- where they showed an interview with me (Alex) and my sister Dani setting up each party and discussing what we had done- FAME AT LAST!
I have attached a photo of the pensioners christmas party for everyone to see.
Have a FABULOUS day and watch this space for lots more blogging.

Another celebrity ordered a chocolate cake
Hi,
So another crazy day at Charly’s Bakery, but alas we have all survived and come out with a smile on our faces ![]()
Today I (Alex) got a phonecall from Meg Ryan’s PA (she’s in Cape Town filming her latest movie to those who havn’t heard yet) so… the phonecall… I was sitting in the office doing as I normally do, when the phone rings “Charly’s Hello” I answer, and on the other side of the line was an American accent “Hi, I was recomended to you by the Mount Nelson Hotel, I am looking for a chocolate birthday cake for the makeup artist on Meg Ryans latest movie set” now I’m thinking YAY, another celebrity to add to our already amazing list of celebrities we’ve done cakes for (Oprah, Arch Bishop Desmond Tutu, Thabo Mbeki, Eric Stoltz… just to name a few), so I recomended our Wicked Chocolate cake (our #1seller to those who haven’t tasted yet, you should!), they said they need enough cake for 30 people so I suggested doing 2 cakes which each serve around 16, so off I went in my creative mind- what on earth can I do to impress the celebrities… and then I got it… I need to just do what we do best. So I did it, 2 wicked chocolate cakes, 1 iced in an elegant feel with gold writing, red roses and gold goie goie (goie goie is basically us splatting cake around the cake- think Jackson Pollock) and the other iced in hot pink, lime green, orange and yellow with lips, hearts and daisies piped around the edge (see our photo gallery for examples of what I’m talking about) and there they were… 2 more masterpieces created by ME… Maybe soon we’ll be jetting off all over the world to make more cakes for celebrities.
Ok so that’s it for now.. I hope you’ve enjoyed the first of hopefully many blog entries on the Charly’s Bakery site…
